An optical fiber itself has independent optical signal transmission function, that is to say, in an ideal environment, only one fiber, plus terminal devices at both ends, it can constitute an optical communication system. Being close to the user terminal, such as building integrated cabling systems, there are larger amount optical devices required, and the transmission performance of multimode transmission system is enough for needs of end users, so multi mode transmission system is chosen.

By the standard use, long-distance trunk system always uses ITU/T G65x series standards and generic cabling system adopts ISO 11801 standard.
